About distribution, royalties and releases
What is LightSound and how does it work?
LightSound is a digital music distribution platform dedicated to independent and emerging artists and labels. Our goal is to give you a clear and complete overview of your music career. Simplified distribution, clear analytics, 100% royalties, and data- and AI-driven tools for promotion and production. With LightSound you can bring your music to all major streaming and download platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer and many more, with no hidden costs and the ability to upload unlimited tracks. You can manage your music independently.
Which digital stores do you distribute to (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.)?
LightSound is currently connected to more than 100 DSPs (Digital Service Providers), including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer, YouTube Music, SoundCloud, Beatport, Bandcamp, Meta, TikTok, and many others.
I don’t trust you, you’re a startup
We started out as artists and producers ourselves, who didn’t always trust new platforms. That’s exactly why LightSound was created with a transparent approach: clear contracts, no percentage taken from your royalties, human support and data that are always accessible from your account. Being a startup means we can innovate faster, truly listen to artists’ feedback and continuously improve the service, not play with their music. If you have doubts, contact us: we’ll show you how we work, who is behind the project and why more and more artists are choosing LightSound.
Is catalog transfer free? Can I move my music to LightSound?
Yes, transferring your catalog to LightSound is completely free and does not involve any additional costs. We can guide you step by step in moving your catalog from another distributor, especially if it’s your first time. We help you through the process to avoid service interruptions and keep your releases online during the transition, without losing streams.
I’ve experienced an unexpected takedown of my music: can that happen with LightSound?
With LightSound you never suffer an unexpected takedown without explanation. If a legal, copyright or content issue arises, we will always notify you in advance or as soon as we receive the report. We will help you understand what the problem is, recover your music where possible and resolve the situation as quickly and transparently as possible.
How many royalties does LightSound keep?
None. With LightSound you receive 100% of the royalties generated by your tracks, excluding only exchange rates and payment processing fees (e.g. PayPal or international bank transfer fees).
How long does it take for my music to go online after distribution?
After you complete the distribution, the average publishing times vary depending on the platform. Generally 24–48 hours are enough, but we recommend uploading your track at least 1 week before the release date to allow for promotion and pre-save. For an optimal release, you should upload it at least 30 days before the publishing date.
How many artists can I manage on LightSound?
You can manage as many artists as you want within your LightSound account, with no numerical limits, as long as they are personal artistic projects linked to you (for example different aliases, bands or projects in which you are directly involved). This way you can keep your entire musical ecosystem under control from a single profile.
How many primary artists can I manage on a release?
You can add as many primary artists as you wish on the same release. We handle both your personal projects and the artists you collaborate with, whether they are primary or featuring.
How much does it cost to release music with LightSound?
Publishing is completely free and included in all LightSound subscription plans. You can upload unlimited tracks at no additional cost. We do not apply distribution fees: our goal is to let you focus on your music without worries.
How do I release on Spotify, Apple Music, and other stores?
With LightSound, an Italian digital music distributor, you can distribute your music simply and quickly. Just upload your tracks to our platform, fill in the information (title, author, artwork, etc.) and choose your target platforms. Thanks to our AI-powered technology, we optimize metadata and categorization to maximize your track’s visibility on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer and all major digital stores worldwide.
Do I need a record label to use LightSound?
No, you don’t. LightSound is open to everyone: independent artists, bands, producers and labels. If you don’t have a label, your music will be released with the wording “Powered by LightSound”. Alternatively, if you own or represent a label, you can specify it during the distribution process.
What is an ISRC code and how do I get it?
The ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) is a unique code that identifies each audio or video recording internationally. It is used to track and recognize your works across platforms and to collect royalties correctly. With LightSound we provide an ISRC code for every track or album you distribute, free of charge. We also provide the UPC (Universal Product Code) for free, which is required to correctly identify and distribute albums, EPs or singles in digital stores. Both codes are included in all LightSound subscription plans.
